Colour Terms in Five Linguistic Images of the World: The Semantic Perspective

Social and cultural factors shape the linguistic perception of colour. At same time, colour terms co-create image world, which allows us to interpret reality profile our statements beliefs. This paper presents six basic terms: white, black, red, green, yellow, blue (both as adjectives nouns) in five different images world following languages: English, French, Italian, Polish, Japanese. The methodological framework is based on linguistics theory basis semantics. study explores denotative connotative meanings with their collocations. data gathered from monolingual, bilingual, collocation, phraseological dictionaries analysed lexical-semantic point view. discusses semantic differences between contrasting cultures, especially blue-green red lexis.
